Anesthesiologist are responsible for monitoring breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure to ensure the safety of the procedure. They administer anesthesia during the procedure, but also have a list of duties before the procedure even begins. Anesthesiologist do their best to learn about a patient’s medical history, current lifestyle, and condition in order to evaluate how to administer their anesthesia. There are list of areas that they have to consider before the surgery. The first area includes reactions to previous anesthetics. It is important for them to know any reactions a patient may have had or any serious side effects after surgery. This also involved allergies to any substances of any known drugs that can trigger such reactions or side effects. This also includes any street drugs. This is important in building trust between the patient and physician. It’s interesting that anesthesiologist also ask about any herbal supplements the patient is taking at the time. Some supplements may change heart rates, blood pressure and may cause increased bleeding or clotting. For example, garlic, which helps prevent colds and flu may cause such side effects. All of these areas known to the anesthesiologist aids in prevention of serious problems after the operation. It is important for the anesthesiologist to build communication and trust with patients so that they can share these things.
During surgery, anesthesiologist have a number of duties. They administer, local, regional, and general anesthesia depending on the seriousness of the surgery at hand. They also monitor the patient. They monitor the volume the patient inhales as well as the level of carbon dioxide exhaled. One thing that is interesting is that they make sure the position stays in the proper position during the duration of the operation depending on the type of surgery that is being performed. Anesthesiologist are trained the treat the patient holistically and monitor the patient's condition. Any change in condition requires them to reduce or increase the amount of anesthesia. Their job is comprise of complex responsibilities and duties. Such things many of us never consider. (Joyner)
