Anesthesiologists face many challenges as health professionals. One very important challenge they face is drug shortage. Throughout the surgery, it is imperative that the anesthesiologist is prepared with all the drugs needed for the patient. Without the correct amount of drugs, the anesthesiologist has to resort to second-choice drugs which may not only mean longer wake-up times, but also post-operative nausea and vomiting. Using these drugs may also mean a delayed procedure for the patient. Another challenge Anesthesiologists face are heavy budget cuts. While most physicians receive 70-80% of a commercial bill, anesthesiologists would only receive about 33% of the commercial bill. This is because they are already at a much lower rate of Medicare payment. Anesthesiologists may have to find a way to compensate for these budget cuts elsewhere. To add on to that, anesthesiologists are having trouble adjusting to the changes and advances in the medical field. Their main job is the administer medicine to the patients as well as make sure their vitals are great during the surgery. The problem is that they don't have a wide range of knowledge about other components of the medical field. More training is being emphasized in order to make sure anesthesiologists are well equipped to deal will all aspects of patient care and assume leadership roles so that they can explore these other areas of medicine. These are just a few challenges these doctors face. It is important to note that these challenges and obstacles are just as pertinent as other physicians and should not be undermined because of their narrow specialty. Such challenges shouldn't be looked at as set backs for this profession. These challenges give anesthesiologist the tools they need to expand their knowledge about medicine and the constant improvements it needs. Medicine is a profession that is changing constantly and produces innovative methods and skills. By branching out their specialty, they are able to provide better patient care.
